KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Golf & Country Club (SGCC), in collaboration with the Sabah Timber Industries Association (STIA), held a Tree Planting Ceremony on Sept 24, to commemorate the generous donation of 300 tree seedlings.
The event marks another milestone in SGCC’s ongoing efforts to contribute to a greener environment and enhance its golf course’s natural beauty.
The ceremony commenced with the symbolic shoveling of the planting site by the SGCC and STIA committee members, symbolising their camaraderie and shared commitment to environmental conservation.
The first seedlings of Laran and Batai were planted by SGCC President Andrew Yap Kim Phin, Captain Ir. Ng Loong Fah, Secretary Julia Hwong, and Treasurer Kenny Wong, accompanied by several SGCC General Committee members along with the STIA Committee represented by President Tan Peng Juan, Deputy President Rahman Khan and Secretary General Sia Mee Kuong, along with other distinguished invitees.
In his address, Tan highlighted that this donation is part of STIA’s contribution to the ‘100 Million Tree Planting Campaign’ launched by the Government in 2021. Sabah has pledged to plant 40 million seedlings by 2025, and the state has already planted 19.5 million, placing it second in Malaysia behind Sarawak. STIA has actively promoted green awareness in schools to cultivate environmental consciousness among the younger generation.
Rahman said the selection of tree species—Laran and Batai—are fast-growing local varieties known for their ability to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, making them valuable in reducing atmospheric carbon. These species are part of Malaysia’s Plantation Programme, which supports a healthier environment and promotes the use of local timber in the timber industry.
Ng, who expressed deep gratitude to STIA for their generous contribution, emphasised that the tree planting initiative not only enhances the club’s environment but also moves SGCC closer to transforming its golf course into a nature park, fostering a flourishing green movement. The trees will significantly improve the natural landscape, providing a more sustainable and serene experience for golfers and guests alike.
This tree planting ceremony is another step forward in SGCC’s commitment to environmental stewardship, reinforcing its collaboration with STIA and contributing to a greener future.
