KOTA KINABALU: Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam has firmly denied allegations linking him to a bribery scandal involving the issuance of mineral mining licences in Sabah.
The alleged bribery was highlighted in a Malaysiakini report, which Dr Joachim has described as “grossly irresponsible” and “ill-intentioned.”
“I firmly deny the allegations implicating me in the purported bribery scandal involving Sabah mineral mining licences as reported in the Malaysiakini news portal,” he said in a press statement today.
“I view the report as grossly irresponsible with ill-intention aimed at tarnishing my reputation.”
Dr Joachim, who also serves as the Local Government and Housing Minister as well as Acting President of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), said he remains focused on his responsibilities despite attempts to discredit him.
“I will not be distracted by any attempts to discredit me and remain sincerely committed to carrying out my responsibilities as a member of the Sabah State Cabinet and Assemblyman for Kundasang to the best of my ability,” he said.
Addressing PBS members and supporters, Dr Joachim urged them to stay united and focused on their mission to serve the people.
“As Acting President, I call upon all PBS members, as well as our supporters, to stay calm, united and focused. Let us continue to work hard for the people. There is still much to do. We need to continue listening, finding what can be improved, and doing our best to bring development to our beloved State,” he added.
He reassured the public that he will face the situation with integrity and confidence, while appreciating the support he continues to receive.
“Rest assured, I will face this situation with a clear heart and conscience. I appreciate the continued support and trust of the people,” he said.
