KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Fellowship Programme initiated by the State Government has proven successful in paving the way for young Sabahans to grow and contribute directly to the state’s development ecosystem, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Haji Hajiji Haji Noor.
“The SMJ Fellowship is an important platform not only for gaining experience but also for shaping identity, integrity, and outstanding leadership qualities.
“This aligns with the State Government’s commitment under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan, where human capital development serves as a core driver in building a sustainable and competitive future for the state,” he said.
Hajiji was speaking at the presentation of appointment letters to 42 young Sabahans selected for the SMJ Fellowship 4.0 programme at Menara Kinabalu today.

“We aim not only to produce leaders who excel in knowledge and skills but, more importantly, leaders who possess genuine empathy for the people. These are leaders who understand the pulse of the community, amplify the people’s voices in policymaking, and prioritise love for the state above personal interests,” he said.
The Chief Minister expressed hope that the fellows would become catalysts for change — sparking a new wave of sincere, courageous, and visionary leadership to drive Sabah towards a more advanced, united, and prosperous future.
He urged the SMJ Fellows to make full use of the opportunity to experience the inner workings of State Government administration — understanding how policies are formulated, decisions are made, and how government machinery operates to serve the people.
“Make this fellowship your leadership arena — a place to build discipline, empathy, vision, and courage. Let integrity be the core of who you are.
“Use this opportunity to prove that young people are capable of generating brilliant ideas, offering bold solutions, and leading with action,” he said.
Hajiji reminded that the youth are not merely successors, but vital assets and heirs to the future being shaped today.
“I wish all SMJ Fellows every success. Let this experience mark the beginning of a leadership journey that benefits both the people and the state. My hope is that this young generation will continue the legacy of leadership that will bring Sabah toward a brighter future,” he said.
The Chief Minister also commended the government-linked companies (GLCs) involved in the SMJ Fellowship Programme for their continued commitment to supporting human capital development in Sabah.
“I was informed that 20 GLCs are participating in this round of the SMJ Fellowship Programme, compared to only 10 previously. This increase is more than just a number — it reflects the strong trust and collaboration between the State Government and GLCs in nurturing Sabah’s next generation of leaders.
“It is also encouraging to note that many fellows have been offered opportunities to join their respective GLCs after completing the programme,” he added.
Hajiji praised the Sabah Youth and Sports Ministry (KBSS) for its continuous efforts in designing and implementing impactful programmes to hone leadership talent, enhance competitiveness, and prepare the next generation of Sabah’s future leaders.
