KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Haji Hajiji Haji Noor has urged residents in Tawau, Kunak, Semporna and Lahad Datu to remain calm and strictly follow the instructions of the authorities following a tsunami warning triggered by a 7.9-magnitude earthquake in Mindanao, southern Philippines, this morning.
Hajiji said the District Disaster Management Committees (JPBD) in the affected districts had been activated to coordinate and manage the situation.
According to the Malaysia Meteorological Department, a 0.4-metre tsunami wave is expected to affect the east coast districts between 10.30am and 12 noon today.
“It is important for the people to remain calm and always adhere to the instructions of the authorities,” he said.
Hajiji added that the State Government, through the Disaster Command Centre, is closely monitoring developments and the overall situation.
