KOTA KINABALU: Comedian Jocelyn Chia should exercise caution before performing or making provocative statements against Malaysia to avoid harming the sentiments of the people of both countries, said Party Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Api-Api Division Information Chief Yee Tsai Yiew.
She said although Chia’s act was part of a comedy show, she should also consider the feelings of others.
“It is particularly inappropriate to make jokes about the Malaysian Airlines MH370 tragedy, as it undoubtedly touches upon the wounds of the victims’ families,” said Yiew.
She believes that comedian’s actions reflect a lack of empathy and go against the principle of ‘do not do unto others what you do not want others done unto you’.
As such it’s not surprising that Chia’s remarks led to widespread condemnation from both Malaysians and Singaporeans.
“Even in a liberal society, one must exercise moderation and not be reckless with provocative statements.
“We should all take this incident as a valuable lesson, and be reminded to exercise our right to freedom of speech responsibly.
“Therefore, we must be extremely cautious with our speech.
“It is best to refrain from humiliating or belittling others to avoid stirring up unnecessary conflicts,” said Yiew.
Yiew praised both the Malaysian and Singaporean Governments for being calm and diplomatic in dealing with the situation, which shows both goverments’ eagerness to maintain a strong and harmonies relation.
