KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Christina Liew has reminded the younger generation to perpetuate the virtue of filial piety and the golden rule of respect for parents and grandparents.
The Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister called on children to appreciate the nurturing and care of their parents and remember the latter’s sacrifices in raising families.
“We should never forget our parents’ birthdays. Let us honour them and show our love and respect on Parents’ Day, and give them the best possible care as they grow older. I wish you all, mothers and fathers, good health and happiness,” she said at the Parents’ Day Dinner Celebration organised by Persatuan Kecergasan dan Pembangunan Orang Tua Kota Kinabalu (Persatuan KOAT) at the Putera Ballroom here last night. Her speech was read by her Political Secretary Vivien Lee.
Recognising the valuable life experiences and skills of elderly citizens, Liew, who is also Api-Api Assemblywoman, stressed that many are still active physically and mentally, and able to perform their social responsibilities.
“Hence, age will never be an issue or a barrier as our country and society value their contributions to nation-building.
As representatives of the people, it is our duty to listen to the suggestions of senior citizens and provide the necessary assistance to those in need,” she said.
On behalf of the Minister, Lee announced a sponsorship of RM20,000 in support of the dinner celebration attended by about 500 senior citizens and guests.
Also present were Persatuan KOAT Life Adviser Datuk Dr Tan Kai Teck, Chairman of Persatuan KOAT Kapitan Anthony Tang, and former Chairman Datuk William Chang.
