RANAU: Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun urged students, especially fourth and fifth formers, to make informed decisions when selecting their education and career paths to improve their chances of getting employment in the future.
He highlighted the importance of choosing a course and a career wisely, emphasising the long-term impact of such a decision on a student’s employability and future success.
Speaking at SMK Kemburongoh here before presenting the Sabah Foundation’s Special Assistance to 106 students, Masidi, who is also Karanaan Assemblyman, cautioned the students against simply opting for what they perceive as an “easier” course, as it may not necessarily result in them getting better job prospects after graduation.
“Choosing a course should not be solely about graduating quickly, but about ensuring that you are equipped with the skills and knowledge that are in demand in the job market,” he said, emphasising that students should take their time to explore their respective interests, strengths and long-term career goals before making a decision.
Masidi also advised students not to underestimate or hastily dismiss a technical course, highlighting the constant demand for skilled workers in various industries. He urged them to consider technical education paths seriously.
He also talked about the promising future of the oil and gas industry in Sabah, saying the State Government actively participates in and earns revenue from the oil and gas sector, particularly in the upstream segment.
“This involvement has led to substantial opportunities and career prospects within the industry, making it an attractive field for aspiring professionals in Sabah,” he said.
Masidi also announced the approval of RM50,000 allocations for the school – RM20,000 for the school library and resource centre to achieve the ratio of 20 books per student and RM30,000 for the school’s sports facilities as the school continuously achieves success in sports and chess despite not having a school field.
