KOTA KINABALU: Sabah will host the premier international flagship technical conference of IEEE Region 10 (Asia-Pacific Region), known as IEEE TENCON 2025 at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here from October 25 to 27.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), pronounced “Eye-Triple-E,” is the world’s largest technical professional organisation dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. It has more than 486,000 members across over 190 countries, of which 67 percent are from outside the United States. Its members include engineers, scientists and allied professionals in electrical and computer sciences, engineering, and related fields.
Globally, IEEE sponsors more than 2,000 conferences and events annually, curating cutting-edge content across its various disciplines.
With the theme “Unleashing Innovation: Elevating Technologies to New Horizons,” TENCON 2025 is being organised by IEEE Malaysia Section in collaboration with IEEE Sabah Sub-Section, Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), Sabah Convention Bureau (SCB), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and SICC.
Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew welcomed the organisers’ decision to bring the prestigious conference to Sabah, saying it would boost the state’s visibility on the global stage.
She congratulated IEEE Malaysia Section on winning the bid and said Sabah has much to offer international delegates.
“It is a great opportunity for first-timers to visit the Land Below the Wind with a myriad of offerings to cater to travellers’ different needs and tastes, from Mt Kinabalu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the sea and islands, including our world-famous diving spots.
“For those interested in community-based tourism, we can take them to homestays outside the State capital for an authentic rural experience. Sandakan also beckons wildlife enthusiasts as the gateway to Sabah’s iconic wildlife and ecotourism,” she said after receiving a courtesy call from the IEEE Malaysia Section and Sabah Sub-Section delegation led by its Chairman Bernard Lim.
Also present were IEEE Sabah Sub-Section Chairman Associate Professor Ts Dr Kenneth Teo Tze Kin of UMS and Associate Professor Ts Dr Ismail Saad.
Liew encouraged technology enthusiasts in Sabah to seize the opportunity to participate in TENCON 2025, noting that the conference will serve as a platform to exchange ideas, showcase achievements and promote advances in electrical engineering, electronics, computer engineering and information technology.
She assured the organisers that SCB, an agency under her ministry, would extend the necessary assistance to ensure smooth preparations.
SCB Chief Executive Officer Noredah Othman said the bureau was first introduced to the organisers at the 35th IEEE Malaysia Section AGM in January this year.
“This is where we learnt that IEEE is the largest global association with half a million members from diverse disciplines. In Malaysia, there are about 3,000 members.
“SCB will support the event by providing advisory services and showcasing Sabah’s rich cultural heritage during the gala dinner to welcome the delegates,” she said.
Lim, who is based in Penang, said the conference aims to gather a diverse group of participants, including researchers, educators, students, practitioners, technologists and policymakers from academia, government, industry and NGOs.
He added that TENCON 2025 will feature keynote speeches and invited talks by distinguished speakers, offering insights into emerging trends and innovations.
“We expect to attract over 500 international delegates in addition to local participants. We also plan to invite over 200 university and school students.
“Besides technical sessions, panel discussions and research exhibits, TENCON 2025 will feature various programmes such as the Innovation Challenge Grand Finale, Energy Forum, Entrepreneurship Programme, Leadership Forum, Education Activities and Humanitarian Activities,” said Lim.
He added that IEEE’s global conference network ensures the latest developments in technology are shared with professionals and young minds worldwide.
