KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah State Attorney-General’s Chambers has reminded the public on the importance of safeguarding the dignity and integrity of the Tuan Yang Terutama Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah (TYT), describing the office as a vital pillar of unity, continuity and sovereignty within the constitutional framework.
State Attorney-General Datuk Brenndon Keith Soh said the TYT, who is appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, is not only the Head of State but also a symbol of respect and stability that must be preserved at all times.
“In this regard, we have noted with grave concern the circulation of offensive, defamatory, false and misleading social media posts concerning the TYT of Sabah. These posts contain information that is wholly baseless, inaccurate, and risk undermining public confidence and trust in the institution,” he said in a statement today.
Brenndon stressed that while freedom of expression is guaranteed under the Federal Constitution, it must be exercised responsibly. He cautioned that the deliberate dissemination of offensive, fabricated or misleading information could erode public trust and amount to criminal offences under Malaysian law, including the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, the Sedition Act 1949 and the Penal Code.
He said members of the public must ensure information is verified through official and reliable sources before sharing it online.
He added that the responsible use of social media is essential in maintaining a respectful and informed public space.
Where necessary, he said, appropriate legal measures will be considered to address and prevent the deliberate spread of falsehoods and to safeguard public order and harmony in the state.
“We remain committed to upholding the rule of law while encouraging constructive dialogue, mutual respect, and accurate dissemination of information. These are the hallmarks of a mature democracy in our State and nation,” said Soh.
He further urged Sabahans to nurture a culture of truthfulness, integrity, and accountability in communication to protect the sanctity of institutions that embody the state’s identity.
“The institution of the Istana Seri Kinabalu represents a symbol of our beloved State’s history and values. It requires the utmost respect for its significance in the eyes of the community and this requires us to collectively protect the dignity and honour of the TYT of Sabah as our noble institution,” he added.
