KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Credit Corporation (SCC), a cornerstone in the state’s financial development for seven decades, celebrated its 70th anniversary with a grand commemorative event held in Kota Kinabalu.
The milestone event was attended by government officials, business partners, former staff and stakeholders who have played an instrumental role in the corporation’s journey since its inception.
Delivering the welcoming speech, SCC CEO Datuk George Taitim Tulas reflected on the corporation’s evolution since its founding on June 15, 1955, as the North Borneo Credit Corporation (NBCC).
Originally launched with a $1 million grant from the Japanese Compensation Fund, the institution was established to support the people of Sabah through accessible financial services and to foster the state’s economic infrastructure.
“This is an extraordinary milestone for our institution and a moment to reflect on the remarkable journey we have had over the past seven decades,” said George. “From humble beginnings, we have grown into a corporation managing assets of RM3.864 billion.”
In 1972, the organization was rebranded as Sabah Credit Corporation, signaling a broader mission and a strengthened commitment to improving the socio-economic welfare of Sabahans. SCC’s slogan, “Hope, Share, and Grow,” continues to embody its core values and community-first approach.
George detailed how SCC has continuously evolved to meet the changing needs of the people and businesses of Sabah. With a wide range of financial services—spanning from personal and housing loans to business financing and infrastructure support—SCC has become a vital instrument of financial empowerment and development across the state.
The corporation’s emphasis on digital innovation was also highlighted, particularly the launch of the YONO super app, developed under SCC’s digital transformation initiative. Through YONO, SCC is not only modernizing its services but also supporting a broader national agenda toward a cashless society.
SCC has collaborated with key partners including Bank Negara Malaysia, MCMC and PayNet to enhance financial inclusion and access across Sabah.
SCC’s in-house tech company, Manggaris IT, has also played a key role in revolutionizing service delivery by developing digital parking systems and cloud solutions tailored to local authorities. These technologies, currently implemented in districts like Putatan and soon in Keningau and Tawau, are streamlining data monitoring and revenue collection processes for local councils.
The CEO emphasised SCC’s commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. He announced that SCC’s ESG framework has been completed and is awaiting final approval by the Board. Furthermore, SCC has maintained a robust Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) portfolio, contributing more than RM70 million towards infrastructure, healthcare equipment, sponsorships, and various community initiatives.
“Our success is measured not only in numbers but also in the lives we touch,” said George. “We have paid RM369 million in dividends to the State Government, RM141.6 million in loan interest, and contributed RM1.3 million in zakat.”
SCC has also played a strategic role in state programmes such as the Sabah People’s Housing Scheme, the Sentuhan Kasih Rakyat (SHUKUR) initiative and the Dayang Program—making affordable housing and financial aid more accessible to Sabahans.
George extended heartfelt thanks to former staff, retirees and previous management teams whose efforts laid the foundation of SCC’s enduring legacy. He also applauded the current SCC workforce for their dedication and professionalism.
“It is not easy to manage people of various backgrounds, beliefs, races, and attitudes. Yet, our team works in harmony for the good of the corporation, the people of Sabah, and our beloved country,” he said. “To them, I take my bow.”
The event concluded with a symbolic gesture, inviting all SCC staff in attendance to stand and be recognized for their unwavering dedication.
As SCC looks ahead, George expressed optimism about the future, underscoring that the corporation is well-positioned to continue playing a transformative role in Sabah’s financial and socio-economic landscape.
“With the continued support of all our partners, stakeholders, and staff, SCC will remain a driving force in shaping Sabah’s future.”
