KOTA KINABALU: The newly upgraded Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal is set to strengthen Sabah’s tourism industry, particularly in the island and marine segments, which remain among the State’s key attractions.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Haji Hajiji Haji Noor said the terminal continues to play a strategic role as a catalyst for tourism growth, noting a significant rise in passenger traffic.
In 2025, the terminal recorded 552,369 passengers compared to 388,395 the previous year, reflecting growing demand for island-bound travel.
“In this context, the Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal has contributed significantly to enhancing tourism offerings, especially in Kota Kinabalu and its surrounding districts,” he said at the opening ceremony of the new terminal tonight. His speech was read by Deputy Chief Minister III cum Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick.
Hajiji said the upgraded facility now complies with international safety standards and incorporates digital systems to ensure more efficient and organised operations.
“The introduction of electronic ticketing, integrated passenger management and smart technology reflects a transition towards a modern and responsive terminal,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the new terminal would be able to accommodate increasing passenger numbers in line with Sabah’s growing tourist arrivals.
Last year, Sabah recorded 3.8 million visitors, an increase of more than 20 per cent, generating RM8.7 billion in tourism revenue.
For over two decades, the terminal has served as the main gateway to the islands within Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, including Manukan, Gaya, Sapi and Mamutik.
“It is not only a transport hub but also a key landmark that connects visitors to Sabah’s renowned island destinations, strengthening Kota Kinabalu’s role as a maritime tourism hub,” he said.
Hajiji added that the improved terminal is expected to boost tourist confidence, stimulate local economic activities and create new business opportunities.
“These efforts will also support the State’s target of attracting more than four million tourists this year,” he said.
He noted that the development complements Visit Malaysia Year initiatives and reinforces Sabah’s position as a leading maritime tourism destination in the ASEAN region.
The project is also aligned with the Sabah Maju Jaya 2.0 agenda, which focuses on high-impact economic growth, the blue economy and sustainable tourism.
Hajiji said the State Government remains committed to ensuring that development is carried out responsibly, with emphasis on environmental conservation and community well-being.
The Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal is part of the RM9.2 billion Jesselton Waterfront City development, which aims to transform Kota Kinabalu’s waterfront into a world-class destination.
He also commended Suria Capital Holdings Berhad and its subsidiary, Suria Bumiria Sdn Bhd, for successfully delivering the project.
“Today’s achievement reflects the importance of strong collaboration between the Government, GLCs and the private sector in driving the State’s development agenda,” he said.
