KOTA KINABALU: The spirit of Sabah reached new heights, literally, when a team of Malaysian climbers, including four proud Sabahans, raised the state’s symbol near the peak of Kala Patthar in the Himalayas on October 15, 2025.
At an altitude of 5,364 metres – just under 300 metres from Kala Patthar’s 5,644-metre summit – the climbers hoisted a logo associated with Sabah, believed to be the highest point on Earth where such a state emblem has ever been displayed.
For perspective, the iconic Mount Kinabalu, Southeast Asia’s tallest peak, stands at 4,095 metres – making this feat an extraordinary milestone for Sabah mountaineering enthusiasts.
The four climbers from Sabah – Stanley Catherinus, Dufy Robert, Shyril Gerald Peter and Darlien Appolonius – stood proudly against the Himalayan snow, donning traditional Sigah Papar headgear and colourful Kadazan Papar attire. The moment symbolised not just their achievement, but the unity and cultural pride of Sabah’s multi-ethnic society.
Their participation was partially sponsored by POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd, the state-owned company behind the POIC Lahad Datu industrial park and port operations in Lahad Datu.
“Despite the extreme conditions – with temperatures dropping to -22°C – and after careful consideration of our guide’s advice, the team decided not to push for the final summit of Kala Patthar,” said Darlien via WhatsApp.
“Yet our resolve never wavered. The spirit that carried us to Everest Base Camp remained strong, fuelled by our shared mantra – pushing the limits and going beyond boundaries.”
That message, he added, encapsulates both the expedition’s determination and the enduring resilience of Sabahans – a quality that mirrors POIC’s corporate philosophy of perseverance and progress.
The image of the four climbers – standing shoulder to shoulder beneath the Himalayan sky, their vibrant traditional wear contrasting against the vast white landscape – serves as a powerful reminder that Sabah’s spirit knows no boundaries.
