KOTA KINABALU: The Transport Ministry has officially approved the Kota Kinabalu Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) programme, marking a significant milestone in the city’s public transport development.
The initiative will introduce a fleet of modern, air-conditioned buses aimed at delivering safer, more reliable and efficient services to residents and visitors, while easing traffic congestion and supporting a more sustainable urban environment.
Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, who also serves as Coordinating Minister for Public Transport in Kota Kinabalu, hailed the move as a much-needed step towards modernising the city’s transport network.
“The launch of SBST in Kota Kinabalu is a momentous occasion. We are responding to the growing demand for better transportation options and this programme will deliver exactly that,” he said.
Appointed earlier this year by the Chief Minister to spearhead public transport coordination, Phoong has been working with Kota Kinabalu Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah, Sabah Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board Chairperson Vivian Wong, and agencies such as DBKK, JPJ and LPKP. Their efforts include upgrading bus stop infrastructure, particularly at high-traffic points such as the airport and hospitals.
The SBST network will comprise eight main routes with 155 bus stops, linking key destinations including the city centre, airport, Luyang, Likas, Tanjung Aru and Putatan. KK Sentral will serve as the central hub.
Features will include electronic ticketing for seamless fare payment, onboard GPS for real-time tracking, fixed schedules for punctuality and reliable services designed to meet the needs of daily commuters.
One of the main routes will connect KK Sentral to Karamunsing, the High Court, Luyang New Wong Kok, Foh Sang, Damai, Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School, Likas Sports Complex, SICC and the city centre, forming a convenient loop.
Following Kota Kinabalu’s rollout, the Transport Ministry plans to extend SBST services to Sandakan and Tawau in the next phase.
“This is just the beginning. We have a clear vision to enhance public transport across the state, and I am confident SBST will significantly improve urban living and transport efficiency,” said Phoong.
The first route is expected to commence operations soon, with full implementation of all routes targeted for completion by next year.
