KOTA KINABALU: Some 200 Korean language enthusiasts gathered at the University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF) here to participate in the Skill for Life: Basic Korean Language programme.
The programme, organised by Sabah Youth and Sports Ministry and the Centre for Languages and Generic Development (CLGD), UCSF, was aimed at providing a comprehensive introduction to the Korean language and communication.
The programme consisted of a one-day face-to-face workshop, which was the second session.
The participants were youths from the Kota Kinabalu area. In addition to the physical workshop, there were also three online class sessions.
Aimed to develop language learning skills among the youths through both online and physical classes, the programme was led by an experienced Korean language teacher Lee Kyung-Eun, who has been teaching in Kota Kinabalu for a long time. One of the main objectives of the programme was to make communication in a foreign language easier.
Coordination of the programme was carried out by Norhayati from JBS and Noorashiqin, the Head of CLGD. The programme started at 8 am and ended at 5 pm, with meals provided for the participants.
The programme began with an interactive session on Hangul, the Korean alphabet, and its pronunciation. Greetings, self-introductions, and simple dialogues were also practised, which was a highlight of the day.
One of the participants, Annisa expressed her fascination with the Korean language and stated that the workshop was the perfect starting point for her, while another, Kelvin said the communication practices with the teacher were eye-opening and made him eager to explore more about the language.
Dayangku Rahimah Pg Hassan, Chairwoman of the programme from JBS, encouraged the participants to continue building upon the foundation laid during the programme.
UCSF Vice Chancellor Dr. Rafiq Idris thanked the Advisor of JBS Metchella Febrynna Metha for choosing UCSF as the venue for the programme and for the opportunity to carry out the programme through CLGD.
He expressed hope for future collaborations and for CLGD to be recognised as the go-to language hub of Kota Kinabalu. – ends
