KOTA KINABALU: Ongoing efforts to brighten up the city at night have been implemented since last year to enhance public safety and curb undesirable activities, such as alleged drug-taking in dark areas, said incumbent Api-Api Assemblywoman Datuk Seri Christina Liew.
She said new lights have been installed at the open car park next to the Kota Kinabalu Central Market as part of the initiative.
“Similarly, the Karamunsing flyover is now brightly lit at night, following the installation of new LED lights to replace old sodium-powered ones. Motorists using the route can see the difference now,” Liew said in a statement Friday after a recent visit to the market.

According to her, new street lights have also been set up in several areas, including Asia City, Api-Api Centre, Taman Sena, Taman Nibung and Taman Bukit Temasu.
Liew said that for the convenience of vendors, 500 new sterilisation LED lights have been installed throughout the Kota Kinabalu Central Market — including the garments’ section, fish market and food court.
“With a brighter, cleaner and more hygienic environment, the improved venue is definitely more appealing to KK folks and visitors,” she said, adding that water supply issues faced by hawkers and traders will soon be resolved.

An emergency desalination plant has been set up on the market’s ground floor to treat seawater and convert it into potable water and for other uses during supply disruptions.
Acknowledging the support of government departments and agencies, Liew said she has been able to carry out her planned projects for the benefit of city residents.

Restoration works also covered road resurfacing, drain widening, and repairs of damaged five-footways and back alleys at Sinsuran and Segama Shopping Complexes, Kg Air and Bandaran Berjaya, she added.
