KOTA KINABALU: Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew will be conferred the prestigious Honorary Fellow title by the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO) in the Philippines next month.
The announcement was conveyed to her by a delegation from The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah Branch, led by its Chairman Datuk Ir Ts Mohd Yaakob Jaafar, during a courtesy call here today.
The delegation comprised Vice-Chairman I Ir Ts Tan Kok Jih, Vice-Chairman II Ir Paul Yap, Immediate Past Chairman Datuk Ir Willy Chin, Committee Member Ir Wah Kheng Haw, Young Engineers Section (YES) Sabah Chairman Lee Tze Yei, YES Sabah Immediate Past Chairman Ag Khairul Akmal Kamaludin and Secretariat official Wendy Wong.
Mohd Yaakob said Liew’s nomination for the Honorary Fellow recognition was submitted by IEM after receiving a recommendation from its Sabah Branch, and subsequently approved by the AFEO Governing Board at its mid-term meeting in Vietnam earlier this year.
He said the AFEO Honorary Fellow title, which carries the post-nominal Hon. FAFEO, is reserved for individuals who have rendered exceptional services to the engineering profession, the institution and their country.
“Datuk Seri Christina has been a steadfast supporter of IEM Sabah, particularly in facilitating the hosting of the 42nd Conference of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (CAFEO42) in Kota Kinabalu in October 2024. Her support was instrumental to the event’s success,” he said.
CAFEO42, chaired by Immediate Past Chairman Ir Chin, not only enhanced regional engineering cooperation but also showcased Sabah’s cultural heritage and its commitment to sustainable tourism.
“Her conferment as AFEO Honorary Fellow is a source of pride, not only for her personally but also for Sabah and Malaysia,” said Mohd Yaakob.
The conferment ceremony will be held on 30 October during the 43rd AFEO Annual Conference (CAFEO43) at the SMX Convention Center Clark, Philippines.
