KOTA KINABALU: Hands were raised in a show of support when it was suggested that the Jiwa Komuniti Madani Programme be held every month as it is beneficial to the local community.
Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew made the suggestion when officiating at the Kota Kinabalu Parliamentary-level Jiwa Komuniti Madani Programme at the Restoran Dulu Kita at Gaya Street, here, Saturday.
She stressed that a programme of this nature is conducive to creating friendships and promoting people to people connection towards enhancing multiracial peace and harmony in forging national unity.
“Community wellbeing is not solely the Government’s responsibility, but requires active participation from every individual in society. A shared commitment will ensure that our communities achieve a harmonious and prosperous life.
“Programmes like this emphasise social and cultural activities that strengthen relationships and promote tolerance among members of different races and cultures within our community,” said Liew.
The Api-Api Assemblywoman concurred that the Jiwa Komuniti Madani Programme is a manifestation of the vital role of community involvement in building social well-being and national unity.
She acknowledged the important role played by the Madani Community (KM) Committee as key movers and disseminators of authentic information about the Madani Government’s initiatives and incentives for the rakyat’s collective well-being.
The Jiwa Komuniti Madani Programme was organised by the Kota Kinabalu District Information Office, together with the three Komuniti Madani of the Kota Kinabalu Parliamentary constituency, namely Deasoka, Jesselton and Luyang.
It is an initiative by the Communication Ministry through the Information Department (JaPEN), aimed at engaging and reaching out to local communities through the KM concept.
“This effort aligns with the government’s aspiration to strengthen an informed society by disseminating accurate, transparent, and beneficial information to all levels of the community,” said Liew.
The Minister praised JaPEN for its initiative in organising “My City, My Responsibility 1.0” in conjunction with the recent 2025 Environment Day celebration, here.
“I understand that the campaign via various activities aimed to encourage all KK residents to take greater responsibility in maintaining the beauty and cleanliness of our city.
“It not only supports environmental preservation efforts but is also in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in areas such as health, education, and sustainable urban development. If we all care and act together, there is no doubt our beloved city will become greener, cleaner, and more livable for all of us,” said Liew.
Through various educational and training activities, she pointed out, community members are empowered with knowledge and skills that enable society to be more knowledgeable, civilised, competitive, innovative and progressive, thus contributing positively to national development.
As part of the programme, Liew presented the zakat to 10 people eligible to receive this charity aid from JaPEN Sabah. They comprised Jamal Karim, Sim Kui Choi, Lim Nyuk Chin, Norpadila Smah, Benedict Chong Yun Kiong, Muhammaad Faizelee Sabli, Zurainah Hassan Sani, Siti Analyn Musidin, Rubinah Guansing and Lorna.
Earlier, in his briefing, JaPEN Sabah Communication & Community Development Services Division Senior Assistant Director Peter Tong said there are 1,878 KM throughout the country.
“Of the figure, 219 are found in Sabah. The Kota Kinabalu District alone has 18 KM, of which three have been set up in the Api-Api N20 State Constituency, that is, Api-Api KM, Jesselton KM and Deasoka KM,” he said. Tong represented the Sabah State Information Director Jainisah Md Noor.
Also present were Liew’s Political Secretary Datuk Vivien Lee, Kota Kinabalu District Information Officer Nur Azean Makbul, Api-Api Community Development Leader Theresa Chong Mui Lan and Api-Api Community Development Officer Yoong Yik Tin.
