KOTA KINABALU: A contingent of 23 young athletes from Prestige Squash Club, based in Kota Kinabalu, proudly carried the Sabah flag at the 8th Borneo Junior Open Squash Championship 2025 held at the Sarawak Squash Centre in Kuching from July 15 to 20.
Under the expert guidance of Head Coach Bryan Spencer Faurillo, along with coaches Julian Jeremiah Faurillo and Mohd Adam John Faurillo, the club’s athletes gained valuable exposure and experience at this prestigious regional tournament, which is classified as a Gold Event under the Asian Junior Super Series (AJSS).
The championship, organised in collaboration with the Asian Squash Federation (ASF), attracted top junior players from 16 countries including Malaysia, Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and the United States. It also marked debut appearances by athletes from Canada, New Zealand, Russia and Sri Lanka.
Club Secretary Mohd Nizam Ali Hasan expressed pride in the club’s performance and the valuable lessons gained by the athletes.
“The 8th Borneo Junior Open was more than just a competition, it was a platform for growth, exposure and self-discovery. Our young players showed grit and sportsmanship against some of the best juniors from across Asia and beyond. We are extremely proud of their efforts, and this experience will undoubtedly shape them into stronger athletes moving forward,” he said.
Among the standout performers were Euodia Lai (Top 6 in the Girls Under-19 category) and Jedidiah Kwan (Top 8 in Boys Under-17), while several others ranked in the top half of their respective categories, demonstrating promise and potential.

The rest of the squad also showed commendable determination, competing in various categories from Under-11 to Under-19 against highly skilled international players.
The club extended its heartfelt appreciation to all parents, sponsors, supporters, and the coaching and management team whose dedication ensured a successful outing for the Sabah-based squad.
“We thank everyone, especially the parents and sponsors, who have continued to believe in the potential of our young athletes. Their support, sacrifices and encouragement are the backbone of our development efforts,” added Mohd Nizam.
