TAWAU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Haji Hajiji Haji Noor welcomed the acquisition of two new quay cranes for Tawau Port, describing the RM70 million investment as a strategic move to strengthen the State’s port infrastructure and support Sabah’s long-term economic growth.
He said the investment reflects the State Government’s commitment through Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd (SPSB) to modernise critical infrastructure in order to enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of ports across Sabah, particularly on the East Coast.
“Once operational, these cranes are expected to improve productivity, operational reliability and the overall efficiency of cargo handling at Tawau Port.
“They will also speed up vessel turnaround time, reduce waiting time and strengthen the port’s capacity to handle larger vessels and increasing cargo volumes,” he said after officiating the launch of the new cranes at Tawau Port here, today.
Hajiji said an efficient and reliable port system is vital in supporting the growth of key sectors, particularly export-oriented industries that contribute significantly to the State’s economy.
He expressed confidence that the upgrading of Tawau Port would further strengthen its role as the main maritime gateway on Sabah’s East Coast while enhancing connectivity with domestic and regional markets.
The Chief Minister also commended SPSB, Suria Capital Holdings Berhad and all parties involved for their continued commitment to enhancing the State’s maritime infrastructure in support of Sabah’s development agenda.
Meanwhile, Suria Capital Holdings Chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan said the investment reflects the Suria Capital Group’s long-term commitment to the development of strategic infrastructure.
“Tawau Port plays a vital role in supporting trade, industry and regional connectivity on Sabah’s East Coast. This RM70 million investment reflects our commitment to equipping the port with the infrastructure and equipment needed to meet future trade demands, while contributing to the economic development of Tawau and its surrounding areas,” he said.
Suria Capital Holdings Group and SPSB Managing Director Datuk Ahmad Rizal Dahli said the acquisition forms part of SPSB’s ongoing efforts to modernise and strengthen Tawau Port.
“These new quay cranes mark another significant milestone in the development of Tawau Port. Once operational, they will enhance the efficiency and reliability of cargo handling activities, improve service quality for port users and support Sabah’s growing trade and logistics requirements,” he said.
Also present were Deputy Chief Minister III cum Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick; State Secretary Datuk Zainudin Aman; and Sabah Ports Authority Chairman Datuk Donald Mojuntin.
