Phoong receives a courtesy call from Carver in Kota Kinabalu today.
KOTA KINABALU: Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe received a courtesy call from Chris Carver, Political Counsel of the United States Embassy in Malaysia, during a luncheon meeting here today.
The meeting provided an avenue to exchange views on a wide range of issues concerning Malaysia–U.S. relations, including political cooperation, economic growth, trade, and investment. Both sides also explored new areas of collaboration to support Sabah’s industrial and socio-economic development.
Phoong highlighted the recent expansion of U.S. company ConocoPhillips’ investments in Sabah’s oil and gas sector, underscoring the state’s attractiveness as a destination for international investors.
He expressed confidence that Sabah’s abundant resources, strategic location and industrial transformation will continue to generate opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships.
He also commended the Embassy’s “sports diplomacy” programmes in Sabah, such as visits by former NBA players to mentor local basketball talent and cultural exchanges with American women’s football players.
He said these initiatives have inspired local youth while strengthening cultural ties and friendship.
Carver reaffirmed the importance of Malaysia–U.S. relations, noting that while the two nations may hold differing positions on certain issues, the overall partnership continues to deepen.
He also highlighted the upcoming visit of U.S. President Donald Trump to Malaysia next month, where he is expected to meet Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to further strengthen bilateral ties.
Phoong emphasised Sabah’s commitment to deepening engagement with the U.S. through government, business and cultural linkages, expressing hope for greater collaboration that will bring new opportunities to the people of Sabah.
