KOTA KINABALU: Four locations in Sabah recorded Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in the unhealthy category as of 8am today, following poor air quality in several areas of the state.
Based on data from the Sabah Department of Environment (DOE), updated on 1 September 2026, Kota Kinabalu recorded the highest reading at 171, followed by Kimanis and Keningau at 156 each, while Tawau recorded 132.
Sandakan, meanwhile, recorded an API reading of 91, which is categorised as moderate.
In this regard, the Sabah State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) advised the public, particularly children, senior citizens, pregnant women and individuals with respiratory problems, to reduce outdoor activities and avoid strenuous and vigorous physical activities.
Those who need to go outdoors are advised to wear a suitable face mask, drink sufficient water, maintain personal hygiene after outdoor activities and ensure good ventilation indoors.
The JPBN also reminded the public to avoid open burning and to keep abreast of API readings and the latest advice from the DOE and health authorities.
Those experiencing symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath or chest pain are advised to seek treatment at the nearest health facility.
The Sabah JPBN will continue to monitor air quality developments throughout the state and advise the public to take precautionary measures to reduce health risks arising from exposure to polluted air.
