KUALA LUMPUR: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Haji Hajiji Haji Noor has expressed his appreciation, on behalf of the Sabah Government, for the RM500,000 contribution granted by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, to victims of the fire disasters in Kudat and Sandakan.
The contribution was presented by the Managing Trustee of the Sultan Ibrahim Johor Foundation, Tan Sri Avinderjit Singh, to the Chief Minister in the presence of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara here today.
Hajiji said the contribution reflected His Majesty’s concern for the people of Sabah affected by the disasters.
“The State Government greatly appreciates the contribution and support provided, particularly for the victims of the fire at Kampung Gumpa, Kudat, and the major blaze at Kampung Bahagia, Sandakan,” he said.
He added that the Sabah Government, through the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN), would continue to strengthen the coordination of welfare assistance, the management of temporary evacuation centres, and efforts to ensure the welfare and wellbeing of the victims are safeguarded.
Also present were State Secretary Datuk Seri Sr Safar Untong, State Home Affairs and Research Secretary Datuk Awang Shahminan Sahari, Sandakan Municipal Council President Datuk Walter Kenson and Kudat District Officer Charles William Dabbi.
On April 16 this year, eight houses were destroyed in a fire at Kampung Gumpa, Kudat, affecting 67 people. Two days later, on April 18, a massive blaze razed 1,050 houses in Kampung Bahagia, Sandakan, affecting 914 heads of household.
