TUARAN: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Haji Hajiji Haji Noor said the State Government aspires to reduce reliance on conventional sources and move towards a more diverse, sustainable and environmentally friendly energy system.
He said this is in line with the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040 (SE-RAMP 2040), which serves as the strategic compass in planning Sabah’s energy future in a holistic manner.
“Through efforts to expand the use of renewable energy such as solar and hydro, we are not only balancing the state’s energy mix but also building strong resilience in facing global challenges and the climate crisis.
“These efforts are our investment to ensure Sabah remains green and prosperous for decades to come,” he said when launching the Tuaran 15MW large-scale solar project and SEC’s Ramadan iftar event at Rumpun Bajau Sama Sabah Cultural Centre in Kampung Lok Batik here today.
The Chief Minister said the launching of the 15MW Large-Scale Solar project here is clear proof of the synergy between government-linked company (GLC), particularly Sabah Energy Corporation (SEC) and the state’s policy vision.
He commended the SEC for its second solar project, following the 5MW project in Labuan, which demonstrated the company’s credibility and technical and commercial capabilities in steering the renewable energy sector.
“This solar project not only adds 15 megawatts (MW) to the state’s energy system, but it also carries greater significance in the transformation of Sabah’s energy structure,” he said.
Hajiji said that during the construction phase, about 150 workers will be directly involved, including local workers.
“This is the best platform for our local talents to gain industry experience and master the transfer of skills in renewable energy technology.
“More importantly, when the project is fully operational, it is expected to create 50 new job opportunities covering operations, maintenance, technical and administrative support.
“This initiative will not only increase household income but also strengthen the green energy ecosystem in Sabah. This is the essence of development under the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya 2.0, which is not merely about numbers, but growth that generates job opportunities, enhances the people’s skills and delivers direct economic benefits to local communities,” he said.
The Chief Minister said the project sends a clear signal that Sabah is committed to strengthening the state’s energy security.
He said Sabah cannot afford to be left behind in this wave of change and must ensure that economic development moves in tandem with environmental conservation for the wellbeing of future generations.
“The State Government rremains steadfast in empowering the state’s development agenda under the SMJ 2.0 framework, and in pursuing this major agenda, the energy sector stands as the most critical backbone,” he said.
