KOTA KINABALU: The Ohana Dash 2024 concluded on a high note, drawing over 750 participants from East and West Malaysia to celebrate family bonds, unity and shared memories.
With the theme “Ohana means family, and family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten”, the event brought together runners of all ages and their furry companions for 8km and 3km runs at Taman Ujana Rimba Tropika.
This year’s event held deep emotional significance, serving as a tribute to the late Melvin Lee, whose memory inspired the gathering.
Lee passed away on Nov 6, 2024, and the event was dedicated to honouring his legacy of togetherness.
KSRun Athletic Club (Kinabalu Sabah Run) director Wendy John described the event as a testament to the power of family and unity.
“The Ohana Dash is more than a run, it is a celebration of the bonds that tie us together. This year, we honoured Melvin Lee, whose love for family inspired us all. His memory lives on through the spirit of this event,” said Wendy, who is also the event’s organising chairperson.
Organised by the KSRun Athletic Club, known for hosting community-focused runs since 2016, Wendy credited the success of the event to the collective efforts of numerous supporters, including Band of Gorilla and Director Syafiq Eizwan, for sponsoring printing materials, Alister Leonard Alai, for emceeing the event, SSBS Communication and Marshall Team, led by Jason Anap, for ensuring smooth coordination.
Wendy also thanked the police for handling permits and traffic control, Kota Kinabalu City Hall for providing the picturesque venue, Honey B for sponsoring refreshments, and University College Sabah Foundation Vice-Chancellor Dr Rafiq Idris for his continuous support.
She also praised the dedication of the senior and junior Monzster team members, saying that their hard work and commitment made this event possible.
“They truly exemplify the spirit of Ohana.”
The event reinforced the importance of cherishing time with loved ones and the power of community.
Reflecting on the turnout and enthusiasm, Wendy said The Ohana Dash has shown that family and community are at the heart of everything we do.
“We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us today to celebrate and create lasting memories.”
She expressed optimism for future editions of the Ohana Dash, vowing to continue strengthening bonds within the community.
“We look forward to welcoming everyone again next year. Together, we’ll keep the spirit of Ohana alive,” she said.
