KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Law Society (SLS) delegation visited Beijing recently to promote the Borneo International Arbitration and Mediation Centre (BICAM).
During the visit, BICAM also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Beijing Arbitration Commission (BAC).
Special Officer to the Chief Minister, Yee Tsai Yiew, who was part of the delegation, said the purpose of the visit to Beijing was to promote BICAM to the Chinese enterprises investing in Malaysia, particularly in Sabah, and to explore cooperation opportunities.
Established in Sabah in July last year, BICAM is the only arbitration centre found in the Borneo island and is only the second centre in Malaysia.
SLS also highlighted that due to Sabah’s having its own state ordinance that differs from those of other states, lawyers who are not practising in Sabah might not fully understand.
“The Sabah Government’s strong support for the Sabah Law Society and BICAM, along with its non-interference in its governance, greatly boosted Chinese investors’ confidence in dealing business in the State” said Roger Chin, who led the delegation.
Wang Chengjie, who is the Secretary General of China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), stated that the delegation’s visit not only reflected close collaboration among legal professionals but also highlighted governmental support for the arbitration industry and he looks forward to having stronger cooperation in the future.
Yiew hoped that through the efforts of the Sabah Law Society and BICAM, more foreign enterprises would be attracted to invest in Sabah, further promoting the state’s economic development.
The delegation also visited the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), the All China Lawyers Association (ACLA) and the Beijing Internet Court.
