PENAMPANG: The Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) will launch its Hongkod Avenue stalls at the KDCA Hongkod Koisaan Hall compound here this Saturday (Apr 13).
Announcing this at a press conference held at Tan Sri Pairin Hall at KDCA today, Huguan Siou (Paramount Leader of the Kadazan Dusun) Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan said these stalls will showcase a diverse array of food and local crafts.
He said the opening of these stalls at Hongkod Avenue, KDCA marks a truly historical occasion as it is just in time for the upcoming Pesta Kaamatan in May.
“Today, we are thrilled to unveil Hongkod Avenue as the newest food and craft landmark in Kota Kinabalu/Penampang. This lively street will offer a fresh ‘shopping experience’ for both locals and tourists. With its variety of delicious foods and handmade crafts, Hongkod Avenue will be a great place to enjoy different tastes and explore local cultures.
“We’re starting a journey to make Hongkod Koisaan a lively place where everyone can come together. It’s not just about physical (building) upgrades but about making Hongkod Koisaan a place where families and friends can come together to spend time enjoying the food, forge memories, share laughter and create a space to share our traditions,” he said.
Pairin said in the past, Kaamatan celebrations were somewhat hindered by the limitations of temporary booths. They were inconvenient and often fell short of meeting the needs of both vendors and visitors, today marks a significant step forward, he added.
“We have decided to replace those temporary booths with permanent structures, equipped with essential facilities and utilities. This upgrade not only enhances the overall experience but also reflects our commitment to ensuring the success and sustainability of businesses and KDCA, at the same time ensuring that visitors of the Pesta Kaamatan enjoy the comfort of these newly built stalls.
“We had received numerous requests to operate stalls here at Hongkod, unfortunately, due to limited space, not all requests could be granted. Today we have 22 food and 12 craft stalls. Soon we will also have a mini market here.
“To those who have secured a space within these stalls, I extend my heartfelt congratulations. Your dedication and passion will undoubtedly enrich the vibrancy of Hongkod Avenue. I encourage all operators to seize this opportunity to showcase our local culture and heritage, transforming Hongkod Avenue into not only a culinary and artisanal destination but also a hub for entertainment, relaxation, and community gatherings.”
Pairin said Hongkod Avenue is more than just a marketplace; it embodies the community’s resilience and commitment to preserving the traditions and cultural heritage.
“This venue is also a beacon of economic prosperity and social cohesion for our community.
“I would also like to mention that right next to these stalls is the Koisaan Cultural Village (KCV) a ‘living museum’ with clusters of traditional houses full of amazing activities and experiences waiting for you, please spread the word around and visit our KCV and then stop at the stalls to enjoy food and buy souvenirs for your loved ones. Let’s make unforgettable memories together, celebrate our culture, and build lasting friendships.
“Moreover, as we open our doors to visitors from near and far, we envision Hongkod Avenue becoming a bustling tourist destination, renowned for its authentic local products and warm hospitality. Our stalls will not only serve as retail outlets but as ‘ambassadors’ of our unique culture, inviting travellers to experience the true essence of our community,” he added.
He said the objectives behind these stalls are clear, namely to enable KDCA to generate income to finance various activities throughout the year (to be self-financed); to provide a platform for KDCA members to engage in entrepreneurship and uplift their economic status; to create opportunities for the communities to showcase their traditional food, crafts, and agricultural products, preserving the heritage for generations to come.
“By providing a platform for local artisans and culinary experts to showcase their talents and skills, we are not only preserving our rich cultural heritage but also fostering entrepreneurship and innovation.
“Therefore, I urge every one of you to patronize these stalls, try our Sabahan food, admire the skills of our artisans, and experience our rich culture. When you support local businesses and share our cultural heritage, you help keep our traditions alive and boost our economy.
“To our esteemed guests and tourism players, I extend a heartfelt invitation to promote and bring visitors here, to experience the uniqueness, authenticity and warmth that define Sabah.”
He also expressed his deepest gratitude to those who have made the building of these stalls possible.
“We owe a tremendous debt of thanks to our Prime Minister for approving an allocation of RM1 million from the Federal Government, a crucial investment in our cultural heritage preservation and development.
“I’d also like to extend our appreciation to the contractors and consultants, for their invaluable contributions. Their dedication and expertise have brought these permanent structures to life.
“Together, let us continue to support and uplift one another as we move forward, hand in hand, toward a brighter tomorrow. Thank you, and may this coming opening be the first of many joyful gatherings at our new food and craft stalls,” said the Huguan Siou.
