KOTA KINABALU: Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry (KePKAS) fully support the Conference on “Protecting Semporna’s Marine Environment from Plastic Pollution and Fish Bombing” to be held at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here tomorrow.
Its Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew gave the assurance to Blu Hope Sabah during a courtesy call by a delegation led by its Chairman Simon Christopher to brief her on the conference, today.
The German Embassy in Kuala Lumpur together with Blu Hope Sabah and Stop Fish Bombing Malaysia (SFBMY) is organising the conference. Blue Hope Sabah is a non-governmental environmental organisation in Kota Kinabalu, dedicated to protecting the ocean and its biodiversity by helping to stop plastic pollution in Sabah.
“I wish the organisers success. We (KePKAS) will do our part to complement the role of the German Embassy towards achieving a plastic-neutral environment and protecting marine biodiversity,” said Liew.
She also announced that her Ministry will host the farewell dinner for the European Ambassadors, including the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Malaysia Dr Peter Blomeyer, and 150 conference delegates at 6.30pm on Tuesday night.
“We need your ministerial leadership. This is great news for Sabah Parks (a government agency under KePKAS). We are not just cleaning up the islands and seas. With the availability of funding, we will be cleaning up the whole of Sabah. We will start from Pulau Gaya right through to Semporna,” Christopher, who is also the Founder of Blu Hope Sabah, told the Minister.
In response, Liew said the outcome of the conference is crucial to decide on the next course of action.
Meanwhile, Christopher enlightened her on Made-in-France water filters, and New Zealand’s product called Plazrok which is a green aggregate made from seven types of plastic. It is used mainly for pavements and in building construction.
Also present were KePKAS Senior Assistant Secretary Dr Dayang Siti Maryam Mohd Hanan, EARTH Platform President Louis Dudley from San Francisco, Blu Hope Sabah Education & Awareness Director Clare Raja and SFBMY Director Terence Lim.
