MIRI: A total of 31 active badminton players, including one from the Brunei Badminton Association, attended an introductory referees course at Gymkhana Club here on May 25-26.
The course was organised by Miri Badminton Association, with the support of the new Sarawak Badminton Association Jeremy Ting.
After the course, they were attached to witness the Victor-Universal Junior Championships at Champion Badminton Hall, comprising 9 courts, from May 27–30.
Former Badminton World Federation Referee Datuk Anthony Linggian, who is currently Referee Assessor/Course Conductor of the Badminton Asia and Badminton Association of Malaysia, was invited to conduct the course.
Anthony shared his vast experience of 40 years, assisting the participants to understand the Laws of Badminton and regulations better.
Subsequently, he was the referee for the Victor-Universal Junior Championships where he demonstrated the art of refereeing to the participants.
With the knowledge taught, Anthony believed that Sarawak had carried out a comprehensive programme by training more referees to handle their tournaments.
Anthony had also conducted the BAM umpires course three years ago in Miri and last year.
During the Victor Universal Junior Championships, three umpires who had passed the BAM Accredited Umpires Theory Examinations last year had their practical assessment as authorised by the Badminton Association of Malaysia.
The tournament attracted 249 players from all over Sarawak, Brunei and Sabah with 16 categories.
Sarawak Tourism Board Chairman Datuk Dennis Ngan, who is also Telang Usan Assemblyman, officiated the opening of the referee’s course on May 25, while the closing and presentation of certificates of attendance ceremony were officiated by Sarawak Deputy Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, who is also Piasau Assemblyman.
Ting is also the Advisor of the Miri Badminton Association.
