Pope Leo
ROME (Bernama-dpa): Pope Leo XIV led the traditional Sunday Angelus prayer in St Peter’s Square on his first public appearance since recovering from cancer surgery, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.
Speaking from the window of his study on the third floor of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican, he greeted tens of thousands of cheering believers in the huge square with the words, “Dear brothers and sisters, have a nice Sunday!”
Many of them expressed their joy and relief at the apparently swift recovery of the 71-year-old.
Michelle Sutko, 70, from Chicago, the pope’s home city, told dpa that she hoped he recovered fully and would be pope for many years to come.
The pontiff was discharged on Saturday from the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, just four days after part of his lung was removed because of a malignant tumour.
On television footage of his departure from the clinic, he appeared to be in robust health and greeted onlookers with a smile, looking relaxed.
It remains unclear whether the pope is now cancer-free after the 90-minute operation. The removed nodule was what is known as lung adenocarcinoma. Experts say this is the most common form of lung cancer. — BERNAMA-dpa
