KOTA KINABALU, 8 Nov 2025: Sabah Tourism Board Chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai commended Good Shepherd Services (GSS) for its decade of dedication to empowering women, children and families through meaningful community work.
He said that GSS’s efforts to uplift communities are in line with the tourism industry’s focus on creating better opportunities for the people.
“Just as community-based tourism allows rural families to earn through homestays, local food, and nature-based experiences, GSS’ Community Kitchen initiative empowers urban families to be self-reliant and resilient,” he said at the GSS 10th anniversary dinner here Friday.
Joniston said the organisation’s commitment to strengthening livelihoods and fostering independence complements Sabah’s goal of inclusive and sustainable growth through tourism.
He highlighted that partnerships between non-governmental organisations, government agencies and the tourism sector are vital in building communities that thrive socially and economically.
Joniston also praised GSS’ collaborations with Universiti Malaysia Sabah and several foundations in providing skills, training and opportunities for rural communities.
Such initiatives reflect the essence of sustainable development, ensuring that progress benefits people at every level, he said.
Present were Archbishop of Kota Kinabalu Most Reverend Datuk John Wong, GSS Chairperson Sr Helen Vythialingam and Organising Chairperson Patricia Ubing.
