KOTA KINABALU: The 33rd Borneo Safari, one of Asia’s most anticipated off-road events, has once again positioned Sabah as a leader in adventure tourism, with other state taking note of its successful model of collaboration and execution.
Sabah Tourism Board (STB) Chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai flagged off the event today from the STB building at Gaya Street, marking the start of an eight-day expedition into the interior jungles of Sabah. (Photo)
Among those present was Terengganu Tourism, Culture, Environment and Climate Change Committee Chairman Datuk Razali Idris, representing the state’s tourism committee which aims to learn from Sabah’s approach in hosting large-scale adventure-based tourism events.
Joniston said it was encouraging to see interest from other states in understanding how Sabah leverages its natural terrain and community partnerships to develop tourism products with international appeal.
“Sabah’s experience shows that adventure tourism can be a key driver for rural economic activity while strengthening our identity as a destination for nature and outdoor enthusiasts,” he said.
He added that knowledge sharing among states can help build a stronger and more diverse tourism industry across Malaysia.
Joniston also praised Sabah Four Wheel Drive Association President Faez Nordin and his committee for their dedication and professionalism in managing the event.
This year’s Borneo Safari attracted a record 640 vehicles and participants, including from 14 countries, with China joining for the first time.
