KOTA KINABALU: The sigah — a traditional headgear symbolising the pride and identity of the Kadazandusun community — is set to make its mark among the world’s highest peaks.
Four Sabahan mountaineers will carry the sigah during their expedition to the Mount Everest Base Camp at Kala Pathar, Nepal, from Oct 6–21. They are among eight Malaysian climbers taking part in the mission.
The Sabahan team comprises Darlien Appolonius (50), Stanley Catherinus (45), Shyril Gerald Peter (34) and Dufy Robert (29) — all from Papar — who aim to reach the 5,644-metre-high base camp and capture a historic photograph showcasing the sigah against the majestic Himalayan backdrop.

Prior to their departure, the team paid a courtesy visit to Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee, Chairman of state-owned POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd, which is one of the expedition’s co-sponsors. They were later given a warm send-off at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport by POIC Sabah officials.
“We look forward to seeing them reach Kala Pathar and create lasting memories of our traditional heritage at the roof of the world. POIC’s support for this expedition reflects our shared spirit of pushing boundaries and going beyond limits,” said Lynette Hoo, Group Deputy Chief Executive Officer of POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd.
