KOTA KINABALU: The State Government has called off the state-level Malaysia Day celebrations scheduled for tomorrow night at Padang Merdeka, due to the widespread disaster crisis triggered by continuous heavy rain affecting at least seven districts in Sabah.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Haji Hajiji Haji Noor said he had informed the Head of State Tun Musa Aman of the decision today.
“The State Government’s immediate priority is to manage the crisis, coordinate recovery efforts and ensure timely rescue operations for affected communities.
“In this time of difficulty, the wellbeing, welfare and security of the people are of utmost importance. We must direct all focus and resources to those affected,” he said.
Hajiji has instructed the State Disaster Management Committee to remain on full alert and ready to act promptly as conditions on the ground continue to unfold amid the prevailing bad weather.
The committee, chaired by State Secretary Datuk Seri Sr Safar Untong, is holding round-the-clock meetings to monitor developments and coordinate immediate responses in the affected districts.
The Chief Minister also urged the public to stay vigilant, heed safety advisories and cooperate fully with rescue teams as intensified efforts continue across the state.
