KAPAYAN: Kapayan Assemblywoman Datuk Jannie Lasimbang has unveiled the installation of a second trash trap at the drainage channel behind Funky Farm restaurant, stepping up efforts to safeguard the Moyog River and surrounding waterways.
The initiative, carried out in partnership with River Squad Kapayan (RSK) and the local community, builds on the success of the first trash trap set up in Kampung Sodomon. That installation intercepted more than 10 tonnes of plastic and organic waste from flowing into the Petagas River last year.
“With this new trap, we are expanding the reach of our river protection efforts. Cleanliness reflects the attitude of a community. Places are shaped by people—not the other way around. Change must begin with awareness and collective action,” said Jannie.
She said her environmental advocacy long preceded her political career, underscoring that the project is more than a physical solution to waste management.
“This is a people’s movement, powered by community spirit and shared responsibility,” she added.
Jannie also announced that the Kapayan River Festival 3.0 will be held at the end of September.
The event will continue community engagement efforts with educational activities, awareness programmes, and celebrations of Kapayan’s rivers.
She urged residents to remain united in caring for Kapayan as a shared home, ensuring its preservation for both current and future generations.
