KOTA KINABALU: Api-Api Assemblywoman Datuk Seri Christina Liew has expressed satisfaction with the progress of ongoing improvement works at the Kota Kinabalu Central Market.
She said these include the installation of a desalination plant to process sea-water into drinking water for traders and vendors at the market, and the introduction of green cleaning technology to eliminate the stench in their environment.
“I am very pleased with the performance of Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK).
“A cleaner, more hygienic and healthier marketplace is in store for vendors and members of the public,” Liew said after her latest visit to the market today.
Following the installation of 300 sterilisation LED lights on the ground floor last year, 50 others were installed on a remaining section of the dry market on the ground and 250 others on the first floor (Food Court and Clothes Section).
As the Api-Api Assemblywoman mingled with the vendors and traders, a clothes vendor identified as Jurmah said, “Thank you, YB.” And at the Spice Corner, a trader named Mariam remarked, “Sekarang terang, dulu gelap (Now bright, before dark).”
At the Fish Market, fishmongers reported that 50 new lights were put in place there to replace old ones last week.
Meanwhile, Liew urged DBKK to rectify a slippery ramp at the fish market where vendors and visitors had fallen and hurt themselves.
She said the installation of the desalination plant and green cleaning technology adjacent to the Fresh Meat Market is scheduled for completion by October this year.
Liew was accompanied on her rounds by Api-Api Community Development Leader Theresa Chong Mui Lan, DBKK Mechanical Engineer Ts Chong Kien Vui, DBKK Market Management Division Chief Hassim Musa and DBKK Market Unit Enforcement Supervisor Stanislaus Loison.
