KOTA KINABALU: UK-based charity Orangutan Appeal UK is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a special event at Sepilok, commemorating a quarter-century of impactful orangutan conservation and dedicated partnership with the Sabah Wildlife Department.
Since 2000, Orangutan Appeal UK has worked hand in hand with the Sabah Wildlife Department, offering both financial and practical support to the world-renowned Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and broader conservation initiatives across Sabah. With 13 local staff members based in Sepilok, the charity has also played a key role in raising global awareness of the threats facing Bornean orangutans.
Over the past 25 years, Orangutan Appeal UK has contributed more than RM14 million to orangutan conservation efforts in Sabah. These contributions have funded critical areas including veterinary care, infrastructure, equipment, research, and the rescue, rehabilitation, and reintroduction of orphaned, injured, and displaced orangutans. The charity also supports education and outreach programmes, both locally and internationally.
The anniversary event will bring together invited guests, conservation partners, and community stakeholders to reflect on the progress achieved and to thank all those who have contributed to the journey.
Jacha Potgieter, Chairman of Orangutan Appeal UK, said: “This anniversary is a chance to celebrate what’s been achieved through strong partnerships, particularly with the Sabah Wildlife Department, whose leadership and commitment have made so much possible. Orangutan conservation requires long-term dedication, and we’re proud to continue supporting efforts here in Sabah, where the impact is both immediate and lasting.”
As the organisation marks this major milestone, it also looks to the future. The challenges facing orangutans remain significant, but with continued collaboration, public support, and local engagement, there is hope for lasting protection.
Orangutan Appeal UK remains firmly committed to working alongside the Sabah Wildlife Department and the people of Sabah to safeguard one of the region’s most iconic and endangered species.
