SEMPORNA: Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew said she will bring Semporna’s proposals for tourism, infrastructure and economic development to the attention of the State Government.
“We will study the proposal papers, accordingly,” she said in response to Semporna District Officer Alexander Liew at the launching of the 29th Semporna Regatta Lepa Festival at the Town Square here Saturday night.
Liew represented Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor to officiate the launch ceremony.
In his welcoming speech, Alexander, who was also Co-Chairman of the Main Organising Committee for the Regatta Lepa Festival, listed out the seven proposals, respectively.
These are :
- To make Pulau Bum Bum a sub-district
- To widen the main road entering and exiting Semporna town
- Construction of a tourism jetty that is modern, integrated and organised
- Construction of the Semporna bus terminal
- Building of the Semporna Cultural Hall
- Building of Dewan Perdana Semporna
- Building of a fish unloading pier for the district
The Semporna District Officer stressed that the proposals reflect the pressing development needs of the district from various perspectives.
“For instance, Semporna really needs a cultural hall for showcasing the district’s cultural heritage, particularly dances, to tourists and visitors. Facilities like this will help boost the economy of the local business community,” said Alexander.
Also present at the celebration were Deputy State Secretary (Development) Datuk Dr Ahemad Sade, Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry’s (KePKAS) Permanent Secretary Datuk Josie Lai, who was also Chairman of the Main Organising Committee for the Regatta Lepa Festival, and KePKAS Deputy Permanent Secretary II Alesia Sion.
