KOTA KINABALU: Sabah plans to bid on hosting the host the International Federation of Landscape Architecture (IFLA) World Congress in 2031.
To further this aim, the State Local Government and Housing Ministry (KKTP) and Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM) plans to join the congress at the IFLA 2025 in France next year.
Deputy Chief Minister II cum Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam expressed confidence that Sabah, with its stunning natural resources, can showcase its beauty to the world, benefiting the state’s tourism sector and economy in the process.

Speaking at the Sabah Landscape Architecture Awards (SLAA) 2024, held at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here last night (Nov 1), Dr Joachim highlighted that exceptional landscape architecture goes beyond aesthetic appeal; it embodies sustainability, resilience, and a deep respect for nature.
He noted that these projects exemplify top-tier design standards, promoting biodiversity, minimising environmental impact and nurturing healthier, more vibrant communities.

He hopes that these exemplary models will inspire future generations to prioritise sustainable practices in landscape architecture.
Dr Joachim explained that the SLAA 2024 is a strategic initiative by KKTP designed to recognise and promote sustainable landscape practices. This initiative aligns with the objectives outlined in the Sabah State Landscape Policy Action Plan, particularly under Core Five: Cultivating Love for the Landscape.
“By celebrating outstanding landscape architecture that adheres to sustainable principles, we aim to inspire both professionals and the public to cultivate a deeper appreciation and stewardship for Sabah’s landscapes.

“I am excited to announce the introduction of the Meranti Award, launched during the I-HIJAU Festival on February 27, 2024. This award recognises the exceptional efforts of local authorities in promoting sustainable development and effectively managing our green spaces. It serves as a testament to our shared commitment to creating a Sabah that is not only beautiful but also sustainable,” he said.
He expressed gratitude to ILAM for their invaluable partnership, emphasising that this collaboration reflects their joint mission to elevate the landscape architecture profession and ensure its principles resonate throughout communities in Sabah.
He was also accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Linda Ewit.
