KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Tanah Airku Merdeka Run (Sabah Day Run) and Tamu Sabah Day are scheduled to be held from August 24 to 31 and August 29 to September 1, respectively.
These are the two highlights of the Sabah Tanah Airku Karnival Merdeka 2024 in conjunction with the Sabah Day celebration.
A culture, tradition and tourism empowerment through a sports programme is one of the planned activities to mark Tamu Sabah Day at Padang Merdeka.
Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew, who is scheduled to launch both events, said her Ministry will be supporting the inaugural Sabah Day Run which offers several categories of run such as Merdeka Charity Fun Run, Mini Merdeka Fun Run and Sabah Day Sprint Run.
“I encourage the public to make a date with Sabah Day Run in the spirit of patriotism, unity and harmony. It is a relay run from one district to another, involving 30 districts,” she said after a courtesy call by a delegation from the organising committee at her office here yesterday.
The Minister was briefed on the two events by the Pertubuhan Penduduk Berasal Sabah President Philip Among and the Programme Director Shiela Among representing the Awesome Borneo Holidays which has been appointed to conduct the Sabah Day Run.
Liew will flag off the Merdeka Charity Fun Run (Anjung Selera, Tg Lipat – Padang Merdeka, KK) at the relay point (at Anjung Selera) on August 31 at 4 pm.
“We expect some 3,000 people to converge on Anjung Selera for this 5km Merdeka Charity Fun Run,” said Philip.
According to Shiela, there are four routes for the 5km Mini Merdeka Fun Run (in each rural district) leading to the finishing point at Padang Merdeka on August 31.
These are the East Coast Route involving 11 districts (Kalabakan, Tawau, Semporna, Kunak, Lahad Datu, Kinabatangan, Sandakan, Beluran, Telupid, Ranau, and Tuaran); North-West Coast Route involving five districts (Pitas, Kota Marudu, Kudat, Kota Belud, and Tuaran); Interior Route (six districts, namely Pensiangan, Nabawan, Keningau, Tenom, Tambunan, and Penampang); and South-West Coast Route (seven districts, namely Labuan, Beaufort, Kuala Penyu, Sipitang, Membakut, Papar, and Putatan). Tuaran is the meeting point for runners from East Coast and North-West Coast routes.
“Sabah Day Run starts on August 24 with Kalabakan as our first destination for the Mini Merdeka Fun Run. The week-long Mini Merdeka Fun Run in the various districts will culminate in the 5km Merdeka Charity Fun Run from three relay points simultaneously on August 31.
“These are the Tanjung Aru-Padang Merdeka route (under Putatan district), Taman Rimba Ujana-Padang Merdeka route (under Penampang district), and Anjung Selera-Padang Merdeka route (under Tuaran district),” she explained.
