Dr Maximus Ongkili
KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) President Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili was speaking up on behalf of the rakyat of Sabah when he revealed a Barisan Nasional (BN) component party used phantom voters to win elections in the State, said its Political Secretary Jonnybone Kurum.
He said it is unfortunate that Ongkili was labeled as “gila” and ungrateful for highlighting on behalf of the people of Sabah the past “sins” of the BN component party.
Following Ongkili’s disclosure, Sabah UMNO Chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin accused him as being ungrateful, while the party’s Usukan Assemblyman Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak labeled Ongkili as ‘gila’ (insane).
“He (Ongkili) was just speaking based on facts written in the Royal Commission of Inquiry on the large presence of illegal immigrants in Sabah. To us, it is okay for Ongkili to be called gila (crazy) for speaking up on behalf of the rakyat (people),” said Kurum who is also the Telupid Assemblyman in a statement today.
Ongkili raised the issue in his speech during the party’s just-concluded 36th and 37th Annual Delegates Congress.
“The President exposed the truth of BN’s past sins and its betrayals of the constitution. Yes, we were part of BN then, and we did voice out our stand and complaints, and even made proposals, but were never addressed.
“As the President had stressed during the congress, it is time to correct the past and solve the illegal immigrants’ menace once and for all,” Kurum stressed.
He said Bung and Salleh should not be too emotional over Ongkili’s statement, because even former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak revealed in a social media posting that it was Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamaed who was behind the “Projek IC” a commonly used term to describe the issuance of Malaysian identification documents to the illegal immigrants.
“He (Najib) acknowledged that the party involved was indeed UMNO, who was then headed by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed and the action was backed by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who was then Mahathir’s deputy. Both leaders have since left UMNO to head their own political party.
“Whatever our President (Ongkili) had said on the issue was not fabricated. It was all based on facts, and we have the RCI report to back our claims,” he said.
