KOTA KINABALU: A luxury yacht which offers private vacations caught fire (pic) in waters off Pulau Gaya, Saturday.
The circumstances leading to the 9.20am incident is still unknown.
It is understood that the boat was anchored near Kg Torong Logong and was said to have caught fire suddenly. The thick smoke that could be seen from the city centre.
The incident was noticed by nearby residents who helped to put out the fire before contacting the Fire and Rescue Department.
A spokesman of the Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) said they received an emergency call at 9.30am.
He said a team rushed to the location via Jesselton Jetty by boarding a Marine Police Force (PPM) boat.
“They managed to bring the fire, which engulfed almost 90 per cent of the boat, under control at 10.37am,” he said, adding no casualties were reported.
The cause of the incident and loss are under investigation by the Forensic Division of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM). – DE
