KOTA KINABALU: The State Government should modernise the fisheries, agriculture and livestock sectors to achieve self-sufficiency, says the Sabah United Chinese Chamber of Commerce (SUCC).
Its President, Tan Sri Andrew Liew Sui Fatt, said the modernisation of the three sectors with latest technologies would also create employment opportunities for the youths in the State.
Liew, who is also a member of Sabah Economic Advisory Council, said such focus by the State Government would also help improve the economic situation of the State, especially when it was facing the prolonged Covid-19 pandemic that has affected all sectors of the economy.
“It will assist the people as well as rejuvenate the economy,” he said.
Liew, who is also Vice-President of the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia, said SUCCC hoped the State Government would urged the Federal Government to expedite the infrastructure projects under the 12th Malaysia Plan for 2021-2025.
“Development funds should be provided early for the Borneo Highway project, electricity, water, power, telecommunications, engineering, airport, seaport facilities and other upgrades to attract local and foreign investment opportunities for the State,” he said.
He said the issues were among seven motions adopted by SUCCC during its annual general meeting held here recently.
Among other motions were for the SUCCC to give its full support for the economic revitalisation plan of the State Government as well as to request for Federal Government to quickly send more Covid-19 vaccines to the State.
Another called on the Federal Government not to close down the Sandakan nursing college.
SUCCC also urged the State Government to provide financial assistance to small and medium enterprises whose businesses were badly impacted by the ongoing pandemic.
The new SUCCC office bearers and supervisory committee has also pledged to handle the long delayed Wisma Tiong Hua building project prudently.
