SIBU: Sarawak is recording a high number of deaths from Covid-19, with an average of 2.48 persons per day.
The Star reported Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, in his Facebook post on Monday (May 31), said the state was in a pandemic crisis with a high number of new cases and deaths.
He said a total of 369 deaths and 46,675 cases were reported in Sarawak since the pandemic hit the state last year.
“Deaths for this year alone is 265 directly due to Covid- 19. This year alone, 2.48 persons died per day,” he said.
According to the breakdown, January saw 19 deaths, February (45), March (25) and April (70).
As of May 30, there were already 106 deaths.
Dr Sim said as the situation had reached a critical level, the state needs to complete its vaccination programme by this August.
“YB KJ (National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme coordinating minister Khairy Jamaluddin) has committed to supply 380,000 doses per week from June onwards as we can administer up to 50,000 doses per day, ” he said.
As the next two weeks are crucial due to the further surge in cases, he calls on every Sarawakian “to love and save yourself, our families, our workers and our Sarawak,”.
Dr Sim said this was important so that the health system would not be overwhelmed by the rise in cases.
